Artist Statement I am a freelance graphic designer who came from Japan to New York City two years ago. In Japan, I designed the covers for many books, magazines, and CDs. One year ago, I started creating works using the medium of silkscreen. There are no concrete images in my work. My production method first clears away any particular images as much as possible. Then, facing my internal chaos, I create whatever image arrives before me in my mind. The theme of this work is "結" ("Tied"). In it, I am describing the interdependence of all living things--trying to capture this concept as an image. The complex relationship of the lines creates beauty and energy, crossing each other at certain times, interfering with each other, twisting, seeming to lose sight of the direction that should be advanced, yet maintaining harmony as a whole. These seemingly inorganic, self-regarding, and individual elements change into an organic structure, creating a dazzling aura that is constantly vibrating between weakness and strength. This trilogy assumes the Buddhist concepts of "無限" ("Mugen"), "無辺" ("Muhen"), and "無量" ("Muryo")--the "Laws of Existence." "Mugen" means "Continuity," "Muhen" means "The Universality of Life," and "Muryo" means "The Exhaustlessness of Life Activity." And thus is the way of the Earth.. |
